Nature of Project
The Health Action Zone for Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham commissioned a ‘Children First’ initiative to provide suitable parenting programmes for parents of young offenders. The Pacific Institute® was approached to address parental self-esteem, self-confidence and personal effectiveness.
The Challenge
As many of the parents attending the programme were doing so as a requirement of a Parenting Order, the groups were very diverse and came from a wide socio-economic and mutlticultural background. There was often a strong initial push-back which needed to be addressed in facilitation.
The TPI Intervention
- STEPS®
- As part of the expansion of the project, ten of the partner agencies participated in additional training in the form of Investment in Excellence® and some went on to train as STEPS® facilitators.
Key Results
- The Project was externally evaluated by Keele University. Headline results from surveys demonstrated: 98% of parents referred to the programme found positive improvements and look at life differently since attending.
- 100% of those completing the programme have indicated that they changed the way they think, from negative to positive.
- 100% rated an improvement in their ability and motivation to help their children get more out of their schooling.
- Parents who had partners said that STEPS® has been very important in supporting their relationship.
